Nasir McDaniel

As an intern, we were given an extraordinary experience.

I also got to participate in a few events over the summer and learn from a group of qualified people as well as explore Austin with our peers. It was extremely fun to participate in all the activities of the CPA Olympics alongside everyone in the agency.

My overall experience with the Comptroller’s office has been great, I’m glad that I get to work with an agency filled with amazing people who are kind, intelligent and always willing to help. I would recommend to anyone who has not already thought about working with the state to give it a try; it is an experience that would be beneficial to everyone, but especially those who are beginning their careers just as I was.

Peter Simmons

Throughout the internship experience, I always felt encouraged, supported and valued.

I wasn’t assigned busy work and never felt like I was sitting around doing nothing — from the start I was working on real problems and could clearly see the impact of my work. I was included in meetings that concerned my team and was always asked to voice my opinion and thoughts on a given topic or problem. Despite having a minuscule fraction of the experience and knowledge of my coworkers, I was never made to feel like the “new guy” in the room.

As my internship was ending, I was offered a full-time position on the Incident Response and Vulnerability Management team. I didn’t have to decide whether I would accept or not — truth be told, I had been hoping to stay on with the Comptroller’s office. Since being hired full-time, I have had the opportunity to take on several new projects and challenges. The internship and working for the agency have been such amazing experiences, and I know I will continue to learn and grow here. Looking back, I can already see how much my confidence and skills have developed. I am excited to continue working with the incredibly talented folks here at the Comptroller’s office and encourage anyone to look for opportunities here.

Benjamin Teddlie

Experiential learning became my daily reality.

Roughly four months later, I began interning for the Comptroller’s office in the State Energy Conservation Office (SECO). SECO dedicates itself to schools, hospital districts, and local governments looking to revamp their aging energy infrastructure. There, I was introduced to a collaborative and excited team of colleagues led by a director who ensured my internship experience was substantive. The team trusted me with consequential tasks. I created several internal documents, including a procedural guide designed for future SECO employees. I participated in meetings, drafted reports, and reviewed contracts.

I proudly accepted an offer to become a full-time employee with SECO. My work throughout the summer was real, educational, and, most importantly, in service of others. I didn’t want that to end.

Stone Werner

I owe the start of my career entirely to the Comptroller’s office and its wonderful internship program.

Throughout my internship, I was supported by a welcoming team. However, I realized that this path, while enriching, wasn't the career I had prepared for in school. Recognizing my aspirations, my manager facilitated a connection with the Web Applications team, where I shadowed an engineer. This experience was pivotal; it mirrored the role I had envisioned throughout my Computer Science studies at the University of California, Berkeley.

Following my shadowing experience, I began training for the team and soon after was offered a full-time position. This is precisely the type of role I have been seeking since graduation, and I couldn't have been more excited to accept. I have since moved to Austin, and I have been really enjoying my time here.
